October 21-23, 2011 - This year’s District Conference promises
to be a very unique opportunity
for Rotarians AND their families and friends. Come and experience the
charm, beauty, and warm hospitality that Carpinteria is known for. "Carpinteria Celebrates Rotary focuses on honoring the Rotarians of our
District" says District Governor Wade Nomura (of the Carpinteria Morning
Rotary Club). “We selected Carpinteria because of their commitment to
share in our goal to host an event that will truly be to honoring our
Rotarians. The streets will be labeled with Rotary Banners, the
storefronts will have posters welcoming the Rotarians, the merchants
will be participating in honoring Rotarians and will also be a part of
the Conference, the City of Carpinteria will honor us with a Welcoming
Proclamation, and the State Park is looking forward to assisting us with
the Sunday Expo.” Friday kicks off the event with a Reception hosted by
the Rotary Clubs

For those of you that went to the Rotary International Convention in New
Orleans, you probably saw me in this Alligator hat. Well there is a
story behind it. District COO Sharon Girod (the She Devil) came up with the class mascot
of the alligator at the Presidents’ Retreat last year to help market the
New Orleans Convention. It was either Paso Robles President Rex
Thornhill and/or Cambria President Bob Putney who named it the
“Wadenator”. In New Orleans, our Party was on the Fourth Floor Penthouse
and guests had to enter through a locked door and private elevator.
Sharon gave me orders to find a hat that would attract enough attention
to be “noticed” on the sidewalk by our invited guests. My wife Roxanne

The City of Carpinteria recently honored Rotary and the 2011 District Conference with a City
Resolution declaring October 16-23 Community Service Week and Welcoming
and Recognizing Members of Rotary District 5240 on the Occasion of their
Annual District Conference in Carpinteria. This was done in recognition for ALL that Rotary does and has done not only in the City of Carpinteria,
but also the many other communities of the District and projects being
done World Wide. Rotary Clubs around the world are dedicated to
improving the quality of life for those in need as reflected in the

Thousands of coats and jackets are earmarked for the needy in Ventura
County thanks to Rotary. This December mark the eighth year of the
Coats for Kids project by the Rotary Club of Venture Downtown. This
year several other local Rotary Clubs are joining the effort. In the late fall, the clubs start collection of coats at various
locations. Four Seasons Cleaners cleans them and organizes their
distribution. Last year 7,500 coats were given to needy children and
adults in the greater Ventura Community – this year the goal is 10,000! That’s collecting, cleaning and distributing 10,000 coats and jackets ... more »
With October being Vocational Service month, District Vocational Service
Director Martin Anderson has been busy visiting clubs and doing
presentations bringing awareness and a better understanding of how
Vocational Service relates to us as Rotarians. Vocational Service is
the only Avenue of Service that pertains to the individual Rotarian, all

Los Olivos President Richard Nagler knows how to set the example for his Club. Richard is the current President of the Rotary Club of Los Olivos and is now the newest member of the Rotary Foundations prestigious Paul
Harris Society. To join the Paul Harris Society, one pledges $1,000
annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund. There

The Rotary Club of Indian Wells Valley sponsored, organized and hosted a supported Park to Park Bicycle Ride
from LeRoy Jackson Park in Ridgecrest to River Park in Kernville Oct.
15. The ride covered about 60 miles, with four rest stops that will have
water, Gatorade, fruit and cookies. There was pizza and cool drinks at
